23 June 2025

To mark International Women in Engineering Day (23rd June), Assystem has partnered with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Women and Work to host “Engineering the Future: Women Leading STEM” an event designed to build momentum around the mission to bring women to the forefront of the UK nuclear and wider STEM Industries.

Since 2010, Assystem, has invested in a dedicated programme IncredibleWoman, to increase the number of women in the company, and particularly those in technical roles. Driven by the knowledge that gender imbalance is harmful not only for society but for the optimal success of complex projects, Assystem is committed to taking action to move the dial and initiate real change that will create more female leadership on nuclear and other energy transition projects.

One such action is the Engineering the Future: Women Leading STEM event that took place at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers headquarters today. It assembled leaders from the UK nuclear industry, wider energy sector and policymakers to discuss the actions to rapidly increase the number of girls choosing a STEM career pathway. Such interventions are needed to build the representation of women in technical roles and leadership positions to create diverse and robust teams on key energy infrastructure projects.

The criticality of this mission is recognised in a recent report by POWERful Women, Female representation in the UK Energy Industry (2025) where authors state that “For a successful energy transition, it is widely accepted that the sector will require a broad mix of skills, perspectives and leadership, including new green skills. That cannot be achieved without meaningful action to remove existing barriers to talent, including making progress on gender balance”.

As a long-term sponsor of the Women and Work APPG, Assystem supports the APPG’s mission to engage the UK Government and policymakers about the key trends and issues limiting women’s role in the economy today. Today’s event will form part of the APPG’s 2025 programme of activity to lobby for policy changes that will help unlock funding and support to advance the cause for more girls and women in STEM.

Assystem is focused on taking action to ensure that women play a central role in the new era of low-carbon power and infrastructure development in the UK. The drive for clean power is creating new projects that present a unique opportunity to reset STEM centred industries such as nuclear and strive for a 50/50 stake for women in the technical and leading roles that will emerge from the energy transition.

I was’ delighted to support the Engineering the Future: Women Leading STEM event on International Women in Engineering Day. Women are still underrepresented in engineering, especially in senior roles, and that needs to change. With a fantastic line-up of speakers from academia and industry, this event is a great opportunity to bring experts together and explore how we break down the barriers that hold girls back from studying subjects like physics and maths and to talk about how we can create meaningful pathways into leadership roles within a diverse range of industries. I’m grateful to Assystem for their continued support of the APPG on Women and Work.
