Finding solutions to climate change is the priority of the 21st century,  and means switching to low-carbon energy. At Assystem, our mission is to accelerate the energy transition worldwide. To achieve this, our 8000 Switchers combine their historical engineering expertise and project management with digital technologies.

In our 12 countries (Europe, Middle East, Asia) of operation, we are working on the production and distribution of low-carbon electricity, through the development of nuclear and renewable energies. We are also supporting the modernisation and development of energy grids, managing the setup and siting for new transmission and distribution networks, and using hydrogen to decarbonise the transport and industry sectors.

UzAssystem is a joint venture between the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the international engineering company Assystem. Our mission is to drive Uzbekistan’s energy transition through innovative renewable energy projects, including wind, solar, hydro, and the region’s first nuclear power plant. We are committed to leveraging digital transformation and advanced engineering solutions to support sustainable energy development.

Job Description

The Senior Power System Engineer will lead and execute advanced simulation, modeling, and technical assessment tasks for power system projects with a focus on renewable energy integration, battery storage systems, and flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS).

This role demands deep technical expertise in steady-state, dynamic, and EMT (Electromagnetic Transients) simulations, as well as protection system design, arc flash studies, insulation coordination, and reactive power compensation. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years of experience in power system analysis, simulation, and grid integration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced power system studies, including:

    • EMT simulations for grid events and converter-based generation using PSCAD and DIgSILENT PowerFactory.

    • Dynamic and steady-state simulations, load flow, contingency analysis, and stability studies.

    • Arc flash hazard assessments in compliance with IEEE 1584.

    • Relay protection setting and coordination studies, including modeling and analysis using vendor-specific tools such as Siemens DIGSI, SEL AcSELerator, ABB PCM600.

    • Insulation coordination studies and surge protection design.

    • Fault current analysis, grounding system design, and equipment sizing in accordance with IEC, IEEE, and NEC standards.

  • Design and evaluate reactive power compensation systems, including STATCOM, SVC, and other FACTS devices, for solar PV, wind power, and battery energy storage (BESS) applications.

  • Conduct dynamic model validation and tuning for inverter-based generation models to ensure accuracy in simulation and compliance with grid codes.

  • Lead technical mentoring for junior engineers and contribute to the continuous improvement of internal processes, models, and engineering standards.

  • Stay updated with evolving grid codes, technical standards, and industry best practices to ensure compliance and technical excellence in project delivery.

My profile

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Systems.

  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in power system analysis, grid simulation, protection engineering, or renewable energy integration.

  • Proven expertise with:

    • DIgSILENT PowerFactory for steady-state and dynamic studies.

    • PSCAD for EMT simulations of converter-interfaced systems.

  • Strong technical knowledge of:

    • Protection engineering, including relay setting, modeling, and coordination.

    • Arc flash analysis in line with IEEE 1584.

    • Insulation coordination and surge protection.

    • Reactive power compensation and FACTS technologies.

    • Fault current analysis and grounding system design per relevant standards.

  • Familiarity with international standards such as IEC and IEEE, and regional grid codes like ENTSO-E Network Codes or equivalent local TSO requirements.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Scripting skills (e.g., Python) for automation of simulation tasks.

  • Experience with additional tools such as ETAP, ASPEN OneLiner, or similar.

  • Familiarity with real-time simulation platforms such as RTDS or OPAL-RT.

  • Professional certifications in Power System Protection, FACTS systems, or related disciplines are highly desirable.
