SWITCH ON THE ASSYSTEM PODCAST
Season 2 Episode 7
How does augmented engineering contribute to improving the performance of nuclear power plants?
PODCAST SUMMARY
In this new episode, we address a key pillar of the energy transition: optimising the performance and extending the operational lifespan of the existing nuclear fleet. As electricity demand continues to rise, and while waiting for new power plants to be built, it is crucial to optimise those already in operation.
This strategy is built around two main pillars: improving output by optimising maintenance outages and extending the lifespan of reactors, many of which are reaching or surpassing 40 years of operation. In both the United States and France, major programmes are underway to address this challenge.
Digital technologies play a central role in achieving these objectives. This is what we call augmented engineering: an approach that combines technical expertise with advanced digital solutions to enhance the safety, performance and longevity of nuclear facilities.
How does augmented engineering contribute to improving the performance of nuclear power plants? Find out in this episode.
THE AUTHOR

Jacques Levesque
Director of French Nuclear Fleet Activities at Assystem
Engineer with a dual specialisation in computer science and biology, he began his career in 1991 at an innovative start-up focused on the automated sequencing of the human genome. He then went on to work in the field of industrial artificial intelligence, supporting the Arcelor group in developing decision-support systems for blast furnace operations.
He joined Assystem in 2003, taking on successive management roles in control systems, industrial IT and system cybersecurity, before becoming head of a 400-strong department.
From 2017 to 2020, he led a Business Unit of 650 people specialising in nuclear research centres and fuel cycle industries, managing strategic projects in collaboration with major players such as CEA, Orano, Naval Group and ITER.
Since 2021, he has led the Parc Business Unit, overseeing Assystem’s maintenance activities for EDF’s nuclear power plants in France. He is implementing a strategy focused on creating Service Centres that integrate digital solutions to enhance operational performance.
