Assystem, an international nuclear engineering group, has partnered with Gauss Fusion, a European industrial company specialising in the commercialisation of fusion energy.

The goal is to structure the design phase of Gauss Fusion’s first commercial fusion power plant, GAUSS GIGA, which is scheduled to be commissioned in the early 2040s. Based on stellarator technology, this reactor will use complex magnetic fields to confine plasma and enable continuous operation.

This initiative is a significant step towards enhancing Europe’s long-term energy sovereignty.

Systems Engineering Expertise Supporting Fusion

In this initial phase of the collaboration, Assystem is drawing on its systems engineering expertise to:

  • Assess and strengthen the methodological framework established for the design phase,
  • Provide concrete recommendations to optimise existing processes,
  • Support the technological maturation of critical systems,
  • Advise on the introduction of MBSE (Model-Based Systems Engineering) tools and methods.

This work also involves supporting the Gauss Fusion teams in structuring their engineering framework in preparation for the detailed design phase and industrial deployment.

Assystem, a long-standing Partner in Fusion

This partnership further strengthens Assystem’s position as a major player in nuclear innovation.
It is part of Assystem’s broader ambition to support the emergence of next-generation low-carbon energy solutions across Europe. Drawing on its engineering and digital expertise — particularly in the development of digital twins — Assystem is fully committed to accelerating the industrialisation of breakthrough fusion technologies.

It also reinforces the company’s leadership in the advancement of fusion energy in Europe, a key solution to the global challenge of energy transition.

With 60 years of experience in the nuclear sector, including over 20 years in fusion, Assystem is a recognised partner for structuring complex projects in regulated environments. We bring proven expertise in systems engineering and requirements management — both essential levers for de-risking key project phases such as that of Gauss Fusion. We are proud to support Gauss Fusion, whose industrial vision and scientific excellence are helping to move fusion energy from promise to reality.
Bernard Blanc Director of Nuclear Development at Assystem
In order to realise fusion energy on an industrial scale, we must build with clarity and rigour, and with the right partners. Assystem provides precisely the engineering expertise that we need to transform our stellarator concept into a reliable source of energy for Europe. Their proven track record in delivering complex nuclear and energy infrastructure projects makes them an invaluable partner on our path to commercial fusion.
