Job Description

I Role 
To lead a team of discipline engineers in the delivery of a technical solution that satisfies the legal and 
functional requirements along with the associated performance conditions to the agreed time, cost and 
quality. 
II Responsibilities 
Solution development and delivery: 
1. Develop and implement strategies for delivery of the discipline-related components of design, including 
use of the supply chain. 
2. Deliver a safe, fit-for-purpose, fully integrated and operable design solution that meets product 
requirements, and includes appropriate validation and verification. 
3. Manage the production of fit-for-purpose discipline-related design deliverables that define and preserve 
the design intent and are organised and align with the plant configuration, as appropriate. 
4. Ensure the design solution is able to be manufactured, constructed, commissioned, handed over, put 
into operation, maintained and decommissioned, and that Life Time Records are delivered. 
5. Ensure all discipline-related technical, safety and engineering risks are identified, owned and managed 
6. Define and execute a discipline-specific risk based assurance strategy and call appropriate engineering 
or design reviews, with appropriate independence, in a timely manner. 
7. Support the PEM in providing engineering design support to work scope definition throughout 
procurement, construction and commissioning project phases. 
8. Develop and deliver work in line with the Project Delivery Fundamentals1

Safe and Legal: 
9. Support development of the hazard management strategies, safety case and associated 
implementation systems and provide pragmatic design substantiation. 
10. Ensure solutions meet all discipline-related legal requirements including CDM, safety (including 
application of the EDSPs), security, environmental and site licence conditions, and that deliverables and 
solutions generated are adequately underpinned. 
11. Ensure all team members are aware of, understand and appropriately apply relevant legislation, SL and 
project / area specific policies, procedures and design issues and this is tested through assurance and 
oversight. 
Requirements Management: 
12. Coordinate discipline-related input to the derivation of requirements and capabilities for Areas, Systems 
and Products, along with the associated conditions, constraints and validation. 
13. Coordinate discipline-related input to product verification planning and evaluation. 
Cost and Schedule: 
14. Develop and update cost and time estimates for delivery of the discipline-related design solution. 
15. Lead the development and control of the discipline-related elements of the project / task baseline scope, 
schedule and budget using the change control process. 
16. Monitor, review and accurately report progress in terms of time and cost, and implement corrective 
actions and recovery strategies where required. 
17. Manage personal / team budget and schedule to meet targets. 
Quality: 
18. Contribute to the production of the quality planning environment e.g. quality strategy, quality plans etc. 
and ensure design solutions are delivered in accordance with this.

19. Identify appropriate design and engineering standards and practices to be used for delivery, including 
the use of Value Improving Practices, and apply them intelligently. 
20. Adopt validation and verification practices for key aspects of work to ensure that the design meets all 
functional, safety and environmental requirements and is integrated with other design disciplines. 
People: 
21. Form a functional team of sufficient competent (SQEP) people to deliver the functional design through 
all stages of the project / task lifecycle. Contribute to resource planning to engage and maintain 
resources necessary to deliver the specified work programme. 
22. Deploy discipline-specific resources to work areas according to business needs, priorities and using the 
‘most appropriate person’ principle. 
23. Lead and manage discipline-specific design resources. 
24. Ensure effective leadership is seen as a key attribute to all delivery activities. 
25. Promote and incorporate good practice and the capture, sharing and utilisation of LFE across the 
specific team and the wider engineering business, including identifying and ensuring subject matter 
experts are appropriately and adequately engaged in a timely manner. 
26. Develop individuals and self by coaching, mentoring or formal training and provide input to appraisals 
and performance reviews, including performance management as required. 
27. Support mobility within the community by taking pragmatic decisions in how the team are deployed and 
being open to releasing individuals for the benefit of their personal development and / or the enterprise. 
III Accountabilities 
1. Ensure control, delivery and reporting of fit for purpose, integrated design solutions that meet 
requirements including site licence, safety, time, cost, quality, environmental and legal.
2. Specification and intelligent deployment of appropriate and adequate design standards, procedures, 
policies, legislative and regulatory requirements, ensuring deliverables and solutions generated are 
safe, legal and adequately underpinned. 
3. Ensure that appropriate design review activities are performed in a timely manner. 
4. Ensure that documents define and preserve the design intent and are organised and align with the plant 
configuration and that the design solution can be deployed on the Sellafield site. 
5. Approval of discipline-specific design deliverables. 
6. Carry out work in line with the Project Delivery Fundamentals1
7. Ensure all design is carried out by competent (SQEP) people throughout the project / task lifecycle and 
supply chain. 
8. The leadership, mentoring, training, health, safety, career development and performance management 
of direct reports.

My profile

Qualifications 

 

  • Understanding of SL Asset Management and Configuration Management processes and arrangements within Decommissioning Asset care and Project environments
  • Minimum 7 years experience in delivering engineering and technical solutions within Sellafield, complying with all legislative, regulatory and company policy standards and procedures e.g. safety, quality, risk, security etc.
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplined team focusing on novel and diverse engineering challenges that have a potential to impact business performance.

 **Security clearance**

This role requires the successful candidate to hold a minimum of a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance.

Warrington 3 days per week with ability to access site and the facilities.  Work from home acceptable 2 days per week in line with general practice.
