CONTEXT AND CHALLENGES

Rolls-Royce Submarines Ltd (RRSL) has appointed Assystem as one of the three key industry partners on the Capability Assured Strategic Partnership (CASP).

Under this framework agreement, Assystem will provide RRSL with the specialist engineering expertise, nuclear capabilities and professional services needed to meet increasing demand from the UK Ministry of Defence and allied nations. The partnership strengthens collaboration across the supply chain, enabling RRSL to benefit from the complementary nuclear capabilities of all three partners (Assystem, AtkinsRéalis and Frazer-Nash).

With a total value of up to £400 million over five years, and the option to extend for a further two years, CASP represents one of the largest supply chain agreements in the history of RRSL.

The partnership builds on more than two decades of collaboration between Assystem and RRSL, drawing on our proven track record in engineering, project delivery and digital services. Through CASP, this long-standing relationship will continue to support the transformation of RRSL’s supply chain operating model and strengthen capability across the defence nuclear enterprise.

MIssions

RRSL is currently delivering the nuclear reactor plants and associated components that power the UK’s Astute- and Dreadnought‑class submarines. In March 2023, it was confirmed that RRSL would also supply all nuclear reactor plants for the next generation of submarines delivered under the trilateral AUKUS agreement.

This increase in demand from the Ministry of Defence and the AUKUS agreement means RRSL plans to double the footprint of its Raynesway site in Derby creating new manufacturing and office facilities. More than 1,000 skilled roles will be created across engineering, manufacturing and related disciplines, with further growth expected across the broader supply chain.

Assystem’s contribution spans a wide range of capabilities, including:

  • Mechanical and Electrical engineering
  • Tooling Design, CAD and Manufacturing engineering
  • Nuclear Safety and Simulation & Analysis engineering
  • Nuclear facilities and Systems engineering
  • Software, cyber and digital capabilities
  • Project Management and Office support

This multidisciplinary expertise will support RRSL across the lifecycle of nuclear propulsion system delivery, while strengthening the wider UK defence nuclear industrial base.

Client benefits

  • Using this innovative portfolio approach to contracting and management, we will promote collaboration, simplification and capability growth.
  • Our combined expertise provides RRSL with a wider, more resilient capability that helps future‑proof operations.
  • This approach prioritises trust and agility, allowing for greater sector efficiency while bolstering the UK’s long-term defence resilience.
