Project presentation

Centrica is progressing plans to deploy Advanced Modular Reactor (AMR) technology at Hartlepool, as part of the UK’s ambition to accelerate the transition to secure, low-carbon energy. Working in collaboration with reactor and fuel technology provider X-energy, the project represents a first-of-a-kind opportunity to establish a fleet of advanced TRISO-fuelled reactors in the UK. Delivering this new generation of nuclear infrastructure requires navigating a complex regulatory landscape, defining a viable development structure, and laying the foundations for future fleet deployment.

At the same time, the programme must meet ambitious timelines and support regional growth, while ensuring that all licensing, permitting and consenting requirements are delivered efficiently and in compliance with UK nuclear regulations.

Project Scope

Assystem was selected by Centrica to support the early phase of the Hartlepool AMR programme.

Drawing on its extensive nuclear new build and AMR expertise, Assystem is:

  • Supporting the preparation of licensing, regulatory and permitting frameworks required for project deployment
  • Contributing to the structuring of the future Development Company, ensuring alignment with regulatory, technical and commercial requirements
  • Providing engineering and project delivery expertise to enable efficient early-stage programme definition
  • Collaborating with Centrica and X-energy to translate reactor design requirements into a UK deployment context
  • Supporting the development of a robust, scalable approach to enable future fleet roll-out across the UK

Through this work, Assystem helps ensure that the programme is positioned for timely progression from concept to delivery.

Client benefits

By partnering with Assystem, Centrica benefits from:

  • Accelerated project readiness through structured support on licensing, consents and regulatory approvals
  • Reduced delivery risk by leveraging proven nuclear new build and AMR expertise
  • A clear development framework to support future fleet expansion and long-term programme scalability
  • Optimised project set-up aligned with best practice in nuclear infrastructure delivery
  • Contribution to regional growth, enabling investment in skills, jobs and low-carbon infrastructure in the Northeast

This collaboration supports the delivery of up to 1GW of low-carbon energy at Hartlepool as a first step in a wider fleet, strengthening the UK’s energy security and advancing its net zero ambitions.
