Context and challenges

The client - a leading UK sustainability conscious data centre provider with several UK locations - is providing data centre space for public and private sector applications.

Assystem Safety and Risk engineers were asked to provide specialised support to provide their expertise for a probabilistic safety assessment, utilising our experience with Risk Spectrum PSA software to provide analysis of various designs and demonstrate contractual compliance with IEEE standards.

Project scope

As part of this project, Assystem carried out the following missions:

  • The creation of PSA models for the electrical and Mechanical (HVAC) systems of each data centre design, including additional models for specified design variations.
  • Analysis of the data centre designs to provide insights into the overall risk profiles, highlighting the main components or connections contributing to unavailability and reliability.
  • The provision of a detailed report into the findings of the PSA study showing how the data centre complied against IEEE standards for electrical reliability of design.

Client benefits

  • The PSA reports enabled the client to demonstrate that the design chosen for its data centre was robust and compliant with the specific contractual requirements of the project, particularly in terms of the availability and reliability expected by end users.
  • By analysing the impact of the various design variants studied on the availability and reliability of the data centres, the EPS reports provided the client with an objective basis for comparing options, making technical decisions for the project and anticipating the consequences of any future design changes.
