SCMC for extension of RER E regional train

Project management Transportation France

Context and challenges

The extension of the RER E (EOLE) regional train to the west of Paris will connect the Haussmann-Saint-Lazare train station to Mantes-la-Jolie. The RER extension consists of:

  • Redesigning the existing line between Mantes-la-Jolie and Nanterre La Folie
  • Drilling a new tunnel approximately 8 km long between the La Défense district in Paris and the Haussmann Saint-Lazare train station, currently the terminus station for the RER
  • Building three new train stations on the new underground section, located at Nanterre La Folie, Porte Maillot and CNIT La Défense

The project goals are to help ease congestion on the network, to strengthen the public transport offering and the quality of service, to complete the network grid and foster development in local communities.
This project has many special features: it is emblematic due to its size, it is complex - in particular the new section between Nanterre and Haussmann-Saint-Lazare - and it includes many interfaces (many contractors involved).
The Scheduling, Construction Management and Coordination (SCMC) mission for the new section was entrusted to Assystem in association with a leading construction firm.

Project scope

The geographical scope of this SCMC mission is between Nanterre and Haussmann-Saint-Lazare for all the infrastructure work and secondary work under the project ownership of the client, who is responsible for maintenance and upkeep of the national railway network.

The SCMC for the new section of the EOLE project encompasses both of the following:

  • SCMC missions for the project management
  • PMO-SCMC missions for the project owner

These missions will be performed to:

  • Monitor schedules and anticipate activities in order to guarantee that lead times are respected during the operational phase
  • Verify the space-time interfaces between the activities of all the actors involved in the EOLE project and the related projects with different project owners

The SCMC is a key element in guaranteeing optimal project coordination to meet project deadlines.

Design basis

  • 6.4 km of double-track tunnel with a diameter of 9.70 metres
  • 900 metres of single-track tunnel with a diameter of 6.90 metres
  • 3 new train stations: Porte Maillot, CNIT La Défense, Nanterre la Folie
  • 225 metres of platform for each station
