Job Description
The Field Engineer is responsible for delivering surveillance of quality compliance within their designated section of the Works, in alignment with the project’s surveillance strategy and quality requirements.
Reporting to the Construction Superintendent for day‑to‑day direction, the Field Engineer will also contribute to wider site management activities and maintain a high level of coordination with other operational members of the project team. In addition to reporting and liaison duties, the Field Engineer is expected to follow all company policies, procedures and protocols relating to construction, health and safety, and quality—and to recommend enhancements where appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
- Verify that the Works are constructed in accordance with the Contractor’s Work Information and notify the Construction Superintendent of any deviations or Non‑Conformance Request (NCR) requirements.
- Provide details to support the initiation and issuing of non‑conformance reports.
- Maintain proactive communication with all stakeholders associated with the relevant scope, ensuring timely and accurate reporting of surveillance activities.
- Contribute surveillance information to support KPI reporting and performance monitoring.
- Identify potential quality issues before they arise and support the implementation of effective mitigation actions.
- Support instructions to implement temporary measures that maintain safety and quality standards and take appropriate follow‑up actions (e.g., issuing communications, convening meetings) to avoid disruption to the Works.
- Ensure that no design decisions are taken informally “in the field” by EDF Energy or contractors; all decisions must follow the formal Quality Process.
- Maintain awareness of current and upcoming site activities to provide informed support to the construction team.
- Ensure tasks are delivered to the required quality levels in accordance with company expectations for health, safety and environmental performance.
- Develop and maintain a strong understanding of contractual Technical Requirements, construction drawings, construction activities, Quality Control Plans and Quality Inspection Records.
- Ensure and monitor that Quality Inspection Records are completed and agreed before any Works are covered up.
- Review contractor performance against the authorised Quality Control Plan and provide feedback as required.
My profile
Essential
- CSWIP 3.1 (or equivalent) and a basic appreciation of NDT methods are strongly desirable.
- Formal qualifications in Mechanical Engineering, Materials, Welding, or equivalent vocational training and experience.
- Broad understanding of the engineering construction industry, including materials, trades, methods, and legal requirements.
- Strong organisational skills, effective delegation, and clear communication abilities (knowledge of French is an advantage).
- Demonstrable experience in producing accurate, concise, and contract‑relevant site diaries.
- Proven track record of working within large, multidisciplinary construction teams.
- High level of attention to detail when checking work and materials, with the ability to maintain quality standards under pressure.
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with contractors.
- Working knowledge of relevant British and European standards and industry codes, including RCC‑M, BS EN and ASME.
- Familiarity with documentation used in safety‑critical construction environments, such as Inspection and Test Plans and End‑of‑Erection Status Reports.
- Experience or academic background in metallurgy, welding, and NDT.
- Proven experience in weld inspection on major construction projects.
Desirable
- Higher‑level welding and NDT qualifications (e.g., CSWIP 3.2, IWS, PCN or equivalent).
- Experience in large power plant design, manufacture, or construction.
- Good working knowledge of quality management practices, methods, and processes.
- Understanding of the fabrication and installation of pressure systems.
