Context and challenges

This client, a University Hospital Center, offers medical services, usual and highly specialized surgical interventions.

The dispersion of endoscopes processing centers by activity (ENT, Urology, Hepato-Gastro-Enterology, Resuscitation) could not guaranty a high level of performance concerning the endoscopes microbiological contamination. In fact, the time between using and cleaning the endoscopes is crutial to avoid biofilm formation.  

Within this hospital, the center for the treatment of flexible and thermosensibles endoscopes was looking for a solution to deal with soiled endoscopes to reduce microbial contamination. The second need was to cover all the deliveries of endoscopes to various departments.

One of the constraints was to perform the deliveries in the middle of medical staff and the public on 4 floors (which required the access to the elevators).

The client has appointed Assystem to develop and deploy stand-alone solution to dispense devices using cobotics.

Project scope

Assystem developed a collaborative robotic system (or ‘cobot’) in leasing (OPEX), as well as its integration inside the hospital. The two mobile robots developed interface with the elevators and contact the various units’ medical staff on their phones to announce the devices’ deliveries. Robots are linked to the client's IT infrastructure to track the deliveries.

Assystem’s missions on this project included:

  • Initial studies and definition of technical specifications
  • Study and development of the robots’ HMI
  • Installation of the Mobile Robots (ADEPT basis + mobility and IHM operational basis)
  • Set-up and integration in the environment and programming of the Mobile Robots
  • Creation of a "Collective and Situational Intelligence" layer in order to allocate tasks to the Mobile Robots
  • Testing and Commissioning
  • Maintenance

Results

  • Reduction in the contamination rate of medical devices

  • Possibility to implement evolutions of the cobots and integrate new deliveries parthways
