Design and BIM for the extension/rehabilitation of a pharmaceutical building

Context and challenges

This client develops and manufactures pharmaceutical substances. The customer wanted to reorganise its "animal facilities" department in order to secure the "Quality Control" activity of the BIO platform for the next 15 years.

This reorganisation includes a 3,000 sqm extension and the remodelling of an existing 5,000 sqm building.

The project has the following goals:

  • Complete control over bio containment
  • Better working conditions
  • Securisation of the equipment
  • Increased floor space for production

This client asked Assystem to conduct studies as part of a mission to supervise the project design.

Project scope

  • Project supervision and design studies for all building trades and for final phases of basic and detailed design studies, project and tender preparation, and assistance for work contracts. The studies cover all the work (extension and remodelling).
  • Use of a 3D BIM model (Revit) for studies to integrate all on-site operational requirements.

The customer subsequently worked with a general construction company for the building work.

Results

The study enabled to validate several elements to establish the project's design basis:

  • The technical choices for containment
  • The configuration of the equipment layouts
  • The flow management

The study enabled to secure the quality control activity for the platform, which was one of the main goals of the mission.

The 3D modelling (BIM*) of the building made it possible to:

  • Anticipate construction scenarios for building the extension and the facilities
  • Control all work phasing
  • Review the capabilities of utilities required for the smooth running of activities
  • Interface with the C&Q (Commissioning & Qualification) strategy defined by the customer
